The Best Places to Celebrate 4th of July in NYC

Naturally, come evening, you’ll want to be perfectly perched for the Macy’s fireworks display, but with a 9:20pm start time, though, what to do with the rest of your Independence Day? Here are 5 options, but let’s start with the most important:

1. Where to View the Fireworks

The best views can be found along the East River. Pier 15, the East River Esplanade, and Grand Ferry Park are recommended for skyline views, but if you want to take it up a notch (or 104 notches) take a ride up to the One World Trade Center observatory for a close-up.

2. Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

Head down to Coney Island to watch Joey Chestnut defend his title as champion. Last year he wolfed down 74 dogs, while the female champion, Miki Sudo, polished off 37.

3. Hit Up a Rooftop

Rooftops are a perfect place to spritz away the day, and if you get there early you’ll be perfectly perched for the fireworks display. Here are 10 of our faves >>

4. Enjoy a Small Town Parade

The annual Travis 4th of July Parade on Staten Island is a great way to commemorate our country. Attend the noon ceremony before the parade kicks off at 12:30.

5. Visit the Statue of Liberty

Get back to your roots with a trip to Liberty and Ellis Islands. Word to the wise: grab the first boat. Since there is no time limit for your stay, the islands continue to fill as each boat full of visitors disembarks.

Happy Independence Day!
